Wow! I cannot believe this move! Aeibscher's a good goalie, but I don't know if I agree with it. He's very streaky... not unlike Theodore, of course. But when it all comes down to it, I think Theodore is the better goalie.
Aebischer has registered 25 wins and 14 losses in 43 games this season
Theodore posted a record of 17-15-5 in 38 games.
For the time being, its a good trade considering Theo is hurt, and has had a bad season. And this was a salary dump in order to be able to have more room to move around and go get some good guys in the offseason.
Aebish will be a good backup for Huet, and we can see what happens down the strech.

Jay- as sucky as Theo has been lately, you cannot compare the 2 guys records..Colorado is just a bit better team then Montreal. As I said in another post, what bugs me is 7 months ago Gainey thought enough of Theo to give him a HUGE contract. Julien stopped playing him and as soon as BG goes behind the bench, he basically snubs CJ's judgement and goes right back to Theo. Now Gainey is dumping Theo for what is little more than a bag of pucks and a backup goalie. Bob..do you really knwo what you are doing or are you a fly by the seat of your pants kinda guy?

Maybe we'll have the cap room to get some raw talent on this team now.

Gainey has never struck me as an impulsive, rash decision maker. Over the past several months he has been taken to task and second guessed about most of the moves he has made. Yet over time a lot of the so called suspect decisions have worked to a certain extent. The Bonk for Garon trade looked horrible, and yet the so called throw in on the deal, Huet has balanced out that trade. (Whether it was more good fortune than insightful analysis on Huet's ability can be debated, but nonetheless the Canadiens got him). Firing Claude Julien seemed like a debatable move, and yet over the past 6 weeks the Canadiens work ethic has improved, and the performance of the special teams is superior to when Julien was the coach. Gainey has been able to coax better performances out of Riberio,Souray and Bonk to name a few.
Gainey has now made his most controversial decision, trading away the clubs so called franchise player in exchange for an inconsistent goalie who has never been able to gain total confidence of his teammates. The trade does free up more cap room for the team, and it probably improves the chemistry in the dreeing room, if nothing else sends a message that theDagenais,Riberio,Theodore faction is all but totally eliminated. From an internal perspective Gainey has made a strong statement: malcontents and players with a poor work ethic will not be tolerated.
Did Gainey get fair value for Theodore, based on past performance no,but based on this season he probably got as much as he possibly could. Realisitically theodore would not get back into the lineup this season to improve his value, so the question is should Gainey have waited until next season to wait and see if Theodore could return to form? By waiting, Gainey does not have as much payroll flexibility to pursue free agents or add salary via trade. This trade does not make me totally comfortable, but haave enough confidence in Gainey that this trade is a precursor to more moves that will improve the team. Additionally, there is no guarantee that Theodore regains the form he had even of last year, let alone his mvp season of 01-02. I suppose now we will really see if Huet is the real deal or not.
TSN guys( Mcguire) basically saying that Theo is never coming back due to the rule changes. He is a small guy so with the equipment scaled down...he looks REAL small between the pipes.
I agree. Theo may be a slid technical goalie when he is focused...but goaltending also invloves some luck...as in the puck just hit me. The size issue with Theo is a potential problem.
