'Sportsnet~HockeyCentral' says that Gainey wants Alyn McCauley for Zednik

And-o digs this rumour...and is praying that it is true!

Alyn is a lifelong Hab fan who is truly a gifted passer...and he plays some serious defense.

He has scored 20 goals before...and could possibly take over the second line, although is perhaps best suited to become the greatest 3rd line centre in the league!

Plus...and this is the clincher...he is apparently REALLY well liked by his mates!

Why not?

Not sure if this is an upgrade but if he's good in the room then why not. How does he do in the playoffs?

On the plus side McCauley makes 800,000 less than Zednik so it benefits the team from a salary cap perspective. He has always had the reputation for being well liked by his teammates, and on the ice very solid defensively. On the negative side, only once has he scored 20 goals in a season, and is not a physical presence on the ice. Sure Zednik is having a miserable season, and his status has dropped from being a number one line guy to a number three line player. Still, do the offensively challenged Habs need a another third line checking center? If the Canadiens are going to trade Zednik, personally I would prefer someone with more goal scoring potential, because McCauley is not going to be the solution to that problem.

I was thinking the same, Wright. We already have Plekanec to fill that role.

I wouldn't make that trade. Zed is tough and we need that. We already have too many soft forwards.

I wouldn't do it.  Zednik was a 31 - goal man (and a 26 goal man, and........).

I don't see the point to that trade.  The last thing we need is for Zednik to become a Hab-killer.

I'm sick of one-sided trades... TSN reminded me of the Darcy Tucker-for-Patrick Poulin trade. And who can forget Claude Lemieux for... Sylvain Turgeon! I don't think I need to mention the Patrick Roy fiasco.

I don't see Gainey repeating the mistakes of the past.

BTW... pathetic display in Laffland tonite.

Even though I've been disappointed and frustrated with Zednik all season, I don't think a trade for McCauley would help.  Our problem is scoring and another center man, or big scoring winger.  Not another body that plays like four to five other guys we have on this team.
