MONTREAL – Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Thursday the signing of defenseman James Sanford to a two-year contract. As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Signed by the Hamilton Bulldogs as a free agent on October 10, 2004, Sanford, 21, is playing in his second season in the AHL. In 37 games with the Bulldogs this season, the Alma, NB native has collected eight goals and 12 assists for a total of 20 points. 5 foot 9? Agian! Can the Habs allow themselves to have 2 defenseman that are 5 foot 9 and under? Boullion plays much bigger than he is but that's rare for a player that size. Does Sanford play as big as Boullion? Whatever!

James Sanford is a hardworker but not very strong, he has good puck movement and good talent but he will never make it to the NHL. HIs strongest suit is shootouts, so the only way he could possibly ever make it would be as a shootout specialist.

If this where Gainey's mind is, don't expect a deadline trade initiated by him.
