I saw the game highlights this morning. In the first period there was a play where Huet went behind the net to get the puck, missed it, and it hit the referee's skate and bounced right to an Islander who almost had an empty net to shoot for, forcing Huet to hustle back and make a great save (two saves, actually, including the rebound).
I think I know the answer to this one, but would the goal have counted?
And by the way, which official was it?

My best guess is that the goal would have counted. I think that the refs are treated as being "in-play". Otherwise, where would the line be drawn? Pucks frequently bounce of refs, and sometimes end up as scoring opportunities.

The goal would have counted, as, like Johnny said, the refs are in play just like a broken stick on the ice is. It was Dan O'Rourke and I thought he was out of position all night long by being in the play every time the puck went behind the net or in the corner.

Refs are part of the game if the pucks hits them and takes a bad bounce so be it like a weird bounce off the boards or glass - Imagine if the refs were not part of the play and a whistle blew if they got hit by a puck - players would be shooting at them all game to get a whistle or stoppage in play etc........
It would have counted. I remeber three years ago in a close game with the Rangers the winning goal occured when the puck went behind the net and the ref (Mick Mcgoo (SP) practicly kicked it to Sandy McCarthy who scored the winner.

Don't give them any ideas...............
But seriously, that's a very good point.

I am Shocked that it was Not "Donut Koharski". Actually I am finding that the ice is very crowded now. The players are bigger, rinks are narrower (than International) and no wyou stick an extra official out there. It just seems to be magnified after watching the Olympics.
