Call for Saku Moratorium
Permalink Closed

I sense that the Great Saku Debate, which I've been staying out of lately, is rapidly losing steam, and not getting any less personal, to make matters worse.

So how about a moratorium on Saku-related posts?  I was going to suggest a month, but that would never work (we'd be out of other topics in two weeks), so how about the first week of March - no Saku posts, no matter what he does, says, or has said about him?

Anybody in?

gohabs.com is the web-site... Koivu = Habs captain. This is exactly like watching the 6 o'clock news. 90% of it is negative and depressing because that is what draws people's attention. Look at this message board for example; the two main topics Theo and Saks. Why? Simply because everything surrounding them lately is contraversial. It's human nature Nil. Did you read Ando's post about Saks' request for a night off? Before I read his post, I thought it wasn't such a big deal but when someone writes how horrible it was, it draws our attention.

There will be drama queens and there will be rational thinkers. This is what makes this so great because you can pick and choose what you want to comment on and flush out the rest. My suggestion to you, the next post on Koivu, flush it! When I feel I'm being drowned in Koivuness, I go to the next post.

Sure, the Saku topic has been milked over and over again but!..it's a rlefection on our widely critical society.

My problem isn't so much the volume of Saku posts, but what it is bringing out of people.  The board is getting very snippy and personal.  Some people are just being plain mean.  My call is for a moratorium on personal attacks and backhanded comments.  Of course, this has been mentioned before and nothing.  Just makes one not want to come and read, let alone post.

Habtastic- I agree. As much as I disagree with And-O and Ab Habman at times, I do not resort to name calling and such things as "you were dropped on your head as a baby" type things. And-O has his point of view. And he tends to not sugar coat it when he expresses it. Can we just express our points of view without resorting to name calling? I like to think that I have for the most part done this. Let's welcome other points of view. I think that the one way w ecan all help is instead of just spouting off about things, try to do a little research to back up our arguments. There have been a couple of occassions where John M for instance has actually changed my opinion because he presented me with some facts.

What I have found is this. Like a case in Judge Judy, sometimes it is all a matter of perspective and, in reality, there are alot of grey areas. And as much as we all hate to admit it, we are ALL influenced by personal bias. Just as And-O or Ab are influenced by their feelings about Koivu, John and Muller are influenced by their positive feelings about Saks and tend to overlook things. My proposal? We point out good AND bad regarding our argument.

You guys are exactly right, of course.

Key Lime: I can certainly choose to ignore the Saku posts, and in large part that's what I've been doing.  I have my favourite posters that I read no matter what, and I used to read 100% of all posts, but many of the posts lately I've been ignoring.  That's good advice.

Habtastic: When I think of it, that really what I object to - the personal bashing, not the topic.  A moratorium on personal attacks I'm sure we'd all agree to!  Funny thing is that I've become a card-carrying Pro-Saku Team member, but he isn't even in my top three favourite players.  It's just a defensive reaction to the passion from the other side.  But again that's my problem.  If the personal attacks get too over-the-line, the Board moderator(s) can deal with it.  If they are merely annoying, I can choose to ignore them.

Thanks Guys!

What we really, really, really need is for the Habs to start playing again.

Barry: The reason I didn't address you in my post, above, is that I had not seen yours yet, even though it beat mine to the Board; we were typing at the same time.

You are exactly correct, as usual.  There's no requirement at all for us all to agree on everything all the time.  Any reasoned argument is valid, whether we agree or not.  But there is a requirement for civility.

Do you mean stop talking about Saku, or stop talking about talking about Saku?

Hell, Barry, I change my opinions all the time!  It's one of the real benefits of being wishy-washy!
