I'm recalling some of the Ribeiro incidents all of a sudden.
1) Practically a rookie - he and Saku get into a fight. Who knows whose fault it is, but the media sides with Ribeiro and Saku is booed. Gainey makes no statement about the event except to blow it off, which probably undermines the captain's leadership.
2) Kovalev causes a key overtime loss by checking his hand rather than continuing to play. Is lambasted in the media and criticized by teammates and coach publicly. Perhaps justified, although Kovalev was the Habs best player in that game. Ribeiro, meanwhile, fakes an injury and grins about it on the bench, thus earning disrespect of many players (and especially referees no doubt), but is given a free pass by management (and amazingly, to some extent the media as well).
3) Ribeiro, during a fairly subpar season (but he's having a "good spell", 0 goals 4 assists in last 10 games, playing on Kovy's line), comes out and criticizes both Koivu and Kovalev (if this comment is true), the best forwards on the team and two key veterans, for lack of effort. Kovalev, the guy who led the team in the playoffs last time around while Ribeiro hid on the perimeter; Koivu, same guy who played the entire playoffs last season with a cracked rib, bruised lung and torn rib cartilage but was second on team in points. What does Ribeiro really know about serious commitment and effort, and what it takes to come up big in the big games?
I'm not a Ribeiro hater, even if I am a huge Koivu supporter. I even have a soft spot for "badass"-fool-Dennis Rodman-Ken Linseman-cheap shot artist-primadonna-misfit type players (I like Kovalev too), but Ribeiro's just a total cancer at this point. And the reason he gets away with it is the absurd influence of the media on this hockey team. He needs to be reprimanded severely for a statement like that if this team is ever going to be a team again. Damn the playoffs and let's think long term here. Nothing less than a (straight-up, nothing backhanded) public apology required.
Like I responded before, Gainey is no counselor and maybe his only possible reaction is to hope his Captain can handle his co-smurf Ribs on his own! He can't hold Saks hand and I'm sure if Saks was any kind of man, he wouldn't want him to!
Again, it's not easy to trade someone so he may stand back and hope this competiveness spills onto the ice and the two play better while increasing the chances of making the playoffs. Then, the patient Gainey will of done the right thing! Remember, this is a big bussiness and wins are the only answer!

I am just happy that Claude's babysitting is now confined to where it belongs..with his 7 month old daughter.

I have to stick up for Ribs even though I am not a Ribs supporter but I can't believe the statement is true. Only a complete idiot would say something about a team member like that. He can't be that dumb.

As much as I dislike this guy John I need to side with you. Unless he was interviewed walking out of a bar loaded at 3 am on Crescent Street, I do not think that even HE is that dumb.

I definitely agree with you there Barry. I can't believe this is really true. On the other hand, Ribeiro has shown in the past he is capable of this kind of public relations brilliance. Who knows at this point...
I am curious if any of you have read or heard anything today that would confirm or refute Ribeiro's alleged comment re: Koivu's leadership?
Most of you state that "he couldn't possibly that stupid", but let's remember these guys are not paid millions because thay are brain surgeons. I have a feeling he could be that stupid. And if he is, then Gainey should come down on him hard and swift - and bench his skinny ass for the next week.
Anything new on it today?

I disagree.
Ribs seems more like a St. Denis bar type guy. And at 155 pounds soaking wet, he'd be loaded before happy hour is over.
