In case you haven't heard yet, Canadiens G Jose Theodore will miss the next 6-8 weeks after suffering a broken heel on Thursday night while walking down the stairs outside his home.  It's just another bad thing to happen to him this season, aside from less than adequate play, and a positive test for a banned substance that has him out of Dick Pound's good graces.  But that's not what we'll talk about today, instead, let's look at something more interesting - the cap implications.

This season, Theodore is making $4.5 M (all figures in USD).  On a per-game average, he earns $54,878.05 per game (whether he plays or not.)  6 to 8 weeks from now puts him in a range of missing between 16-25 games.  As the CBA states, if Theodore misses at least 10 consecutive games, his salary over that period and any subsequent games from that injury will become exempt from the salary cap.  This means that the team will save between $878,048.78 and $1,371,951.22 on the cap, directly subtracted from the $39 M ceiling.

Now, let's not forget that Yann Danis, who will be recalled after the Olympic break, will now see his salary count against the cap.  He, at the NHL level, is making $1.075 M (rookie max for his draft class), which works out to $13,109.76 per game.  The range that his salary will count against the cap will be between $209,756.10, and $327,743.90.

The differences:
At 16 games: $668,292.68  (hard cap space)
At 25 games: $1,044,207.32 (hard cap space)

Now, we all know what this means, the Habs now have the financial means to go after another goalie through trade, or let Huet and Danis take the team through the final quarter.  Some of the notable impending free agents goalies who could be possible rent-a-players are:

Manny Fernandez (MIN)
Dwayne Roloson (MIN)
Curtis Joseph (PHX)
Vesa Toskala (SJ)
Patrick Lalime (STL)
Ty Conklin (EDM)

There are other goalies, such as Martin Biron or Mika Noronen (BUF), who may not be unrestricted, but available to be had.

One thing is for sure, the trade deadline may very well have become much more interesting for Hab fans.  Stay tuned.

How many years does Biron have on his contract? If the Habs DID acquire Biron wouldn't that force them to trade a goaltender next season?

I would love to see Biron come to the Habs. He's a good solid goalie. But yes, that would mean somebody would need to be traded. Possibly Theodore in the offseason. Who knows... but that seems the most plausible at this point. I just don't know who would want him and his huge salary.

My point remains this..what do you do with Theodore and his salary when he gets back? 6-8 weeks and you start paying him again. You ship Danis back to Hamilton and then you are left with THeo, Biron (or whomever) and Huet in Montreal, all using cap space. Next idea?

I notice that Luongo is missing from this list.  I believe he is an UFA this off-season, isn't he?  His contract is (according to TSN) $3.2 million.  Wouldn't he fit in?  Don't get me wrong, I would prefer (with the play of Huet and the Danis potential) that they go get some scoring power, or a really good defenseman (of course, every team in the league would like either of those).

By the way...rumor has it that X Rays on Jose's foot showed a "HAIRLINE FRACTURE"..get it? Hairline fracture? Thank you very much Barry is playing here all week.


If only Jose had not been such a heel all year....

 Guys, I just think Gainey should stay away from acquiring a goalie especially another small guy like Biron who may not be any better than Theo in the long run!


 I think he should fill other holes and let big Huet do his thing!


 This could be the better situation to pick up a D-man or centerman!

Someone else mentioned (might have been Barry???) that while Theodore will miss a substantial number of games, he should be back before the end of the season.  Once he returns to the active roster, both salaries apply to the cap.  Long story short, Gainey probably won't get anyone with the extra cap space.  And I agree with you, I would prefer they get a top level center or defenseman, but, I think it will be difficult, as every team competing for a playoff spot (whether to get in or improve their chances at going deeper) is looking for the same, and what do the Habs have to offer up in exchange?

I really like Biron. But i still havent given up on theo yet. Guess it shows how much i really like this guy. Eventually im going to have to choose, or the decision will be made for me through a trade...( like what happened with Rechhi ) but i would much rather see Theo re-gain his form. Theres one thing about montreal. The forget things really easily. If theo started playing MVP form again, we would be right back to THEO THEO THEO and Cristobal WHO-et?

For example, you could "rent-a-player" with a huge salary, but only the salary amount during the time he plays for you counts.

You're right Plouf, what I was getting at was, when Theodore comes back, you still have what's left of his contract, plus what's left on the rent-a-player's contract.  If they get a player that will make an impact, I would think that the rent-a-player would be making more than the league minimum.

You are 100% right!  For all you dreamers, Theo is not going anywhere.  He makes way too much $$ and not enough saves. Just when I thought that his trade value couldn't go any lower.  A team would have to be out of their minds to trade for Theo.
