He was centering Montreal's best line with Mats Naslund and Mario Tremblay,. He was having a fine season and he had scored the winning goal on March 9th, 1995 against Hartford.
But with the flick of a stick it was all over.
Ulf Samuelsson's stick caught Mondou in the eye, and he could no longer play. Desperate he returned after 11 games to try, but two games later he knew it was over.
The Canadiens hired him as an assistant in Verdun, and Modou later moved into the NHL teams front office, but it was no way to channel his ability.
After a rookie-of -the-year season in the AHL, Mondou joined the Habs for the '77 playoffs in which the team won the Stanley Cup, and he made the roster full time in the fall. Montreal won two more Cups and Mondou contributed both on offence (three 30-goal seasons) and on defence.

One of my all-time favourites. Saw him many times with the AHL Nova Scotia Voyageurs at the old Halifax Forum. The man was a superlative stickhandler, and a nice guy to boot!

Actually, for those looking for a comparable to Saku, here's a good one. About the same size, not dissimilar style (Pierre a bit more of a sniper, Saku a bit better passer and skater), and about the same stats (Pierre .83 PPG in a more open era and on great teams, Saku .80 PPG).
