I've always wondered why the Toronto Maple Lafs have 13 banners hanging at the ACC, i always thought it was only 11. Were the Lafs known as the Arenas one year than the st. pats another year. It sounds as if toronto is trying to boost it's numbers artificially.
Were the canadiens called something different before 1909? if so shouldn't we technically be counting those cups as well? There seems to be four other teams from montreal
Wanderers, Maroons, Montreal AAA, Shamrocks and Victorias
The Leafs hang "Championship Banners" in the wake of The Arenas and St. Pats (both short lived).
You see, the NHL assumed total control of Stanley Cup competition after 1926.
*Here's one for ya: Ottawa WON the Cup in 1927 beating Boston! Should Ottawa maybe hang a banner too?
At the Bell Center, there is a plaque that shows all of Montreal previous teams championship titles prior to the NHL. It's about 5 or 6 yards from one of the beer stands on the main concourse.
At one point in history, Montreal had a second team, the Maroons. That was a different team than the Habs. In fact, the Maroons were the in existence before the Habs. However, both teams co-existed for a period, so it was no as though the Maroons were the alter-ego of the Habs.
The legitimacy of one of the Habs' cups is disputed for some reason (war interrupted year, I think). Does anyone know which year and for what reason?
Is that the explanation for why, officially, the Habs have 23 cups, even though it's unofficially 24?
Ummm..I'll try to explain the 1919 Cup series to ya.
Spanish Flu everywhere!
It killed a guy from the Sens. Habs vs. Seattle. A bunch of Canadiens came down with it. The series was deadlocked at 2-2-1-Including, like, a 100 minute scoreless draw in game 4!! Trustees of the Cup wanted to give the Cup to Seattle, but because the Habs didn't have enough guys to play due to illness, and were seriously outplaying them large - Seattle refused by saying that the Habs should have won it. Descision goes to NO WINNER.
Joe Hall dies of Flu. Sad stuff....so did the Habs owner, George Kennedy around 1920.

Boy, talk about your days of chivalry in sports. Teams trying to give the cup to each other? Imagine what your coach would do to you now if you went up to a referee and said "you know that wasn't actually a goal, I kicked it in...."?
Everything was like that then I guess...."Tally ho..good job, mates..YOU deserve the Cup! You played like a real sport..and you beat us hand down at that match, Ol' chum.." lol!
Most of the guys back then who played knew each other somehow, so you were a little tighter knit as pals.
Scott Stevens wasn't lookin' for a bone crushing check on Hap Day or somethin', you know?
