Worst Trade in Habs History?
Permalink Closed

The Patrick Roy trade to Colorado... The trade gave Colorado 2 stanley cups and gave Montreal Martin Rucinsky along with Andrei Kovalenko. Definitely among the worst trades of all time. Whenever you mention Montreal and Colorado your thoughts turn to the deal that ruined the Habs. That's where the downward spiral began for us.

Maybe looking at it from another angle would really cement the fact that it was a horrible trade...it's similar to a trade that would of involved Martin Brodeaur (Devils) for Alexander Daigle & Pavol Dimitra (Senators) in 1996. Kovalenko / Daigle both disappeared and Rucinsky/Dimitra had some success. Like Colorado with Roy, I'm sure the Sens would of already won a cup with Brodeaur

I know that there have been some other lousy trades but that one is hard to beat, unless there was one before my time.

Not to mention that Thibault came over in that trade. Man did that guy suck!

Agree, that was the worst trade!

Do you think the LeClair and Desjardin trade that followed was up there as terrible also?

How about a stud D like Chelios(who would probably still be here mentoring our young D) for an over the hill Savard(who was way past his prime)  We really got hosed on that one and to this day it still makes me ill thinking about it.

To me, that trade with Phillie was far worse than the Roy one.  I don't think Thibault was that bad.  Look up his stats. They weren't all that different from Roy's (until the playoffs, of course).

The Roy trade would have to be close to the worst trade in hockey. No?

Didn't we make an aweful trade in the early 80's involving Rod Langway?  Maybe someone can do the leg work for me.

The Roy trade, of course, made worse because we lost Keane.

Thibault was bad. I don't care about his stats. When the game was on the line, he stank.

 Figaro, good memory!

Langway/ Brian Engblom/ Craig Laughlin for Rick Green/ Ryan Walter

The Langway trade was not even close to the Roy Trade. Green and Walter were valuable players for the Habs during those years. We one Lord Stanley with them...

The Roy trade signified a real downfall for my Canadiens after that game ofr awhile.

Did you guys see the game where Roy and Tremblay clashed?

I'll never forget that night.

So really, this looks like a decent trade. I thought that Langway was traded for someone like Natress.

The Langway trade was a trade that helped both teams - Washington I believe had never made the playoffs before that time and did after the trade - Also Langway being an American working in Quebec was getting taxed to the max (This was before smart agents/accountants) and was threating to quit or retire so Montreal had to do something. They got Walter/Green (both high 1st Round draft picks - top 5 ?) who played as many minutes as Langway did in Montreal and Walter was a good leader and Montreal with these additions made to two Stanley Cups winning one and being in the top third of the league consistently. I think Doug Jarvis was part of this trade as well but at that time Carbo was ready to take over the defensive centre position that Jarvis had..........

So far, the Roy trade looks like the worst!

When that whole Roy fiasco was happening and then he was traded, were the Habs in a playoffs position?

Just curious to see if we had any magic left at the time to go for another Cup!
