If only the entire NHL sched could be squeezed into October and November, Savage might well lead the league in points every year. Unfortunately for him, there are many months after those two when games must be played, and during those times, Savage is hard pressed to register any points. He's facetiously called "Mr. October", and although 5 career 20 goal seasons, Savage typically scored more than half of those in the first few weeks of the season.. As a result Montreal had no quams about trading him to Phoenix in 01-02 when HE demanded millions for his "scoring". Puzzlingly Phoenix happily signed him to a lucrative contract, which he followed by scoring exactly 6 times with the Coyotes. Savage did make two scoring impressions in the Montreal ledgers. He recorded the first Montreal hat trick at the (then new) Molson Centre - IN OCTOBER 1996 LOL! - and he had six points in a road game aginst the Isles in 1998. The first Habs to have such a night since Joe Malone!!
I liked Savage. And if I remember correctly, we got Sergei Berezin for him. Hardly worth it! Berezin was gone the next season, so if Savage's contract was about to run out, I would have rather kept him on the team instead. Mr. October or not, he was still a good goal scorer and a good player to have around.
