I know this sounds crazy but I really like watching Richer when he was on! He could really dominate when he was in his prime and all the tools were working! Good skater and had a canon!
I thought he was exciting like Kovy is now and then! Remember when he would fly down the wing and wind up with his canon slap shot? The goalies would pray that he'd miss his target as he was pretty accurate! He also could dangle in close and had a good wrist shot!
I don't understand why his offense didn't last longer than it did in his career but he played a big part in the Devils Cup with a defensive strategy!
I'm trying to remember but was it a straight up trade for Muller? I guess Richer helped us more than we think and was traded at the right time in his career! Actually they both won a Cup with their new team so it was good for both players!

When Richer had his shot going (which was for about 3 years there) he was the best pure goalscorer I've ever seen on the Habs, because he could score from anywhere. Including Shutt.
But he seemed to lose concentration sometimes. Or a lot of the time. And at some point his quick release seemed to disappear, so he didn't have the career he should have.
Anyway, can you imagine him on the point on our power play? That's what we need. Souray takes too long to wind up.
As much as I appreciated Richer's talents - and two 50-goal years - he is one player I absolutely do not miss. He was too much of a head case. Otherwise his career might have burned longer and brighter. He was strong as an ox, and God could he shoot!

By the way, don't confuse The Stephane Richer with THIS Stephane Richer. Both Quebecois, almost exactly the same age, almost the same size, both played in the Montreal organization, same name - but the similarities end there.

Was he gay? I had heard that but is that truth or rumour? I also heard that Wendal Clark was gay but he has since married. I also heard Glen Anderson was...
Not that I really care but it is interesting in a way...

I'm with you on this one. I heard the same rumours but never a confirmation!
It changes nothing, I still thought he played the game well!

Yes, I also heard that about Richer, Anderson, and Clark (even about Messier). But who knows? Or cares? Like George Costanza (and John M) said, not that there's anything wrong with that.
I wonder if Wendel Clark leaves his wife behind to go fishing with a buddy every summer?

Stephane the natural Richer was and is not gay. He use to go out with my cousin female Debbie. Richer was a great player just not acomplete player. Until he went to Jersey his defensive game got better. The guy could still play hockey he's only 38 and can still shoot cannonating shot. I have tickets to a oldtimers game in march and Richer's playing. I look forward to watching Steph. Go Habs Go.
