During the Canadiens recent slump there seemed to be much frustration directed towards Bob Gainey over his lack of personnel moves and the decisions he has made towards drafting and trades. I thought it would be interesting to compare his personnel decisions with his recent predecesors. Under Rejan Houle, the Canadiens either drafted for or traded for the following notables, Ryder,Riberio,Souray,Theodore,Markov. Under Andre Savard the Canadiens notable personnel decisions through trades, or the draft were, Boullion, ggins,Zednik,Bulis,Sundstrom,Perezoghin,Plekanec,Komisarek,HainseyCote.
Under Gainey the Habs have either traded for or drafted, Kovalev,Begin,Bonk,Streit, Danis,Dandenault (free agent) Downey,Ivanis,Dagenais.
At first glance, it certainly appears that perhaps the most vilifed GM in the teams recent histroy, Houle acquired the most impact players on this team! People were quick to try and run Houle out of town. Of course he was responsible for hiring Trembaly as coach which lead to the Roy fiasco.
Nonetheless his overall personnel record in retrospect looks pretty good. At this juncture Gainey's moves look pretty weak in comparison to Houle's and Savard's. Still Gainey should be affored sometime to see if his subsequent moves develop. Still who would have thought Houle would have such an eye for talent?!
Actually it was Serge Savard who traded LeClair and Desjardins for Recchi. It was the last deal Savard did before he got axed. Andre Savard I agree has a good eye for young talent.
Gainey's status could improve fairly quickly if Alexi Yemelin who had a great showing on defence in the world junior tournament for Russia keeps developing. He has a lot of similar skills to Markov, and could develop into an impact player. Of course Hainsey and Komisarek were also touted to becoming impact players when they were drafted!

Serge Savard was another one who was vilified, but wasn't it he who acquired most of the team that won the Cup in 1993?
(Or perhaps I'm thinking of Irving Grundman who acquired most of the talent that won the Cup in 1986, Or both?)

Thing is, between them Savard and Houle also GAVE UP a lot more than Gainey has. They started with something. Gainey's been dealt a weak hand, pretty much, except some decent young players. When he arrived, the only big-name star was Theo - nuff said. So he's still got a ways to go before we can be sure. Let's face it, you can't evaluate a GM in the short-term. Gainey's still pretty new.
As has been said, Houle had a lot more time than either Gainey or Savard to draft and he also started with a lot more, but ended up with less. Savard could draft well, but was not good at the other duties. The Bonk trade, apparently, was more Pierre Gauthier than Gainey. We need to give Gainey at least 3 years before we can really evaluate and he has only had 1.5. Also, as Pucky said, the salary cap changes things. this is a new era and GM's have to re-learn the job. It is a heck of a lot harder to make a deal these days.
