Am I the only one that doesn't really care about the scandal?
It doesn't mean much to me in the sense that I don't see why there should be a big huff and puff. Any current NHL players that would be caught in this wouldn't really see any jail time. The only affect-y would be Big T, and possibly, depending on what goes down- Gretzky's wife.
And people act surprized that there was an illegal gambling ring. It isn't the first, and it won't be the last. And yes the mob could be involved (allegedly [sp?]) and there could have been games thrown, but I doubt that, and that would be a long stretch. To throw a game isn't that easy looking from a solo player perspective, the only way-score on your own net, keep taking dumb penalties, or pass to the other team, however, its not a guarentee.
Anyways, I think this thing is just being blown up
Time will tell what road this takes. They have already arrested a New Jersey State Trooper. I think it will be bigger than we think,. Local papers are saying Travis Green from the Bruins is implicated too. Who knows
To me it depends on who's involved and what the really bet on. I hope Gretzky doesn't get hurt for this because he made the NHL in the US, practically, and is the uber embassador for the game.
Ya I agree, The media loves this story. During the lockout all they had was speculation over crazy possibilities. Now they have a league making money and actually growing in some markets. This story gives them something to talk about. It is a soap opera at this point. I even saw the news had stock footage of Wayne's wedding in the 80's... as if his empire now hangs in the balance.
Well I for one don't buy it. Who cares! It is against the law to gamble on sports in most states... the sad thing is that this can encourage illegal betting rings to happen. If there is money to be made in a market smart people will make that money. If you make a vice like that illegal does it stop? No. Does the state benefit? No. It seems like it is totally out of their hands And now the mob is involved? Is this the best they can do to the Mafia? Arrest a state trooper and Rick Tocchet?
Its a mess for Tocchet and I don't think the police would arrest him if he had absolutely no part in it. The sad thing is that people can now have a field day with naming names of players in the NHL that "placed bets". I would rather want real proof before I would start printing names in the media. I hope to hear some solid evidence of wrong doing. Otherwise leave them alone. Gretz is being told to step down from his team and now team Canada because of faceless accusations. That is a shameful result of "journalism".
You nailed it, Mdm. I have also heard that it runs a lot deaper than the NHL and involves other sports and a larger crime ring. The belief is that they can get the sports people to talk and lead them to the real criminal element. Sounds like this is going to get really big. As for Gretzky, he says he isn't involved. I believe him.

It appears to me that the only thing Wayne is guilty of is trying to protect his wife who appears to have a substantial problem with Gambling. Really, there are alot bigger issues that the police and media need to worry about, IMHO. As for Janet, I have offered her to come stay with me and rehab.
