So I slept on it overnight, and checked this morning to see And-o and AB Habman deny (or agree, if the stars aligned right) that Saku Koivu has been the Habs' best forward this year**. But no reply!
And I said "forward", since I think the best player has been Andrei Markov. I agree with Saku11 on that one, although he also evaded the question.
So let's hear it, guys!
(** As for empirical evidence, I will agree that Kovalev has an ever-so-slightly higher PPG average - .90 to .89 - but Saku brings more to the table.)

Nilsey- I think if you look at stats it is obvious..he leads the team in scoring and is a plus 2.So yes, duhhhh..he is the best forward on the team. I do not need to put my rocket science degree on the wall to figure that one out. What one needs to do though is have perspective. Our top scorer is ranked 85th in NHL scoring. 39 points. Obviously our team (Kovalev included) is horribly low scoring. So although he is the top scorer on the team for now, one has to wonder where he would fit in on a team that actually scored points? Also perspective. He is 42nd in scoring for centers in the NHL. Crosby has 61 points and for those who argue that Saku has had no support in Montreal how do you think Syd feels? Again I am not bashing Koivu. I will leave that up to others. I have too much respect for him to do that. I am hoping that all I did was provide some perspective and another point of view here.

Agree on all points. My point was merely that with all the arguments and rhetoric back and forth ad nauseum, can we agree on one single, simple point. So far, you agree. We'll see about the others.

I like Koivu tremendously , admire his courage and all he has done for the team ,he is a leader in his own right , more often than not he leads by example , ......however were I the GM he would be the second line centre and an assistant , not the captain
a bit off the wall , but I am also concerned that being in Montreal might not be good for his health , last year I lost my best buddy to cancer , read a lot about the disease and am now a firm believer that high levels of stress may be a factor ......would I trade him ..never ...but if he wanted to go , ..lastly while on my morning rant I don't think those shallow people at Bell Centre who boo him deserve such a player ...it's ironic ,though I remain a Hab's fan I find the behaviour of some of the Bell Centre so-called faithful incomprehensible and detestable
Well put FF. In spite of my lack of "ringing endorsements" for everything Koivu does or does not do, I hope everyone on this board knows the total respect and admiration I have for this guy and what he has done for the Habs over the years. I guess that is what irritates me a bit. I do not treat Saks any different than any other hab and I point out when he is doing well and , like the other night, I point out when I feel he has screwed up. Maybe it is because I expect more of Koivu as a leader and veteran. But then again I know Koivu expects more of himself too. Let us not kid ourselves. Saks will make the right decision for HIM and ultimately, Saks will be the one who decides to stay or go.

Nice comments all around. I didn't want to bring up the "C" word, but that factors into how I feel about Saku. It hits close to most of us, I would guess.
Still, no reply to the Yes/No question.............

Saku has been the best forward this year and 2nd best Hab all year. He is 39th for centers in the league in points right behind Sundin, about the same number of games played. He would be better as a second line center but on this Habs team he is our #1. As for leadership, he is an on ice leader, never been outspoken and takes a hit from the French media for not learning French.

Well put JohnM. And Nil'd I figure we hear from barry33 that Saku is the habs best forward. I think we hear from FF that Saku is the habs best forward. And that's what it's all about isn't it? Who cares "if' or "does" he deserve to be a number one center or whatever.
The fact is the habs lack depth at center which really does not help Koivu's stats. I figure if you put Koivu on a "scoring" team he would likely be in the top 10 scoring centers. But who cares. He is a Hab and our best forward.
No word from AB and And-o? Not trying top stir the pot. I just would like to see if they have an argument that I could get behind or not.

Sak all the way!!!!!!!!!! Great post by FF, my feelings exactly. And-o must be away, but I have noticed lately that his "idiot" brother has made some "leaf-like" / "anti-Sak postings. I could go on but might have to get the Ref involved.........nufsed.......normie

Holy Geezuz Nil'd...the Habs best forward (in my...I mean And-o's opinion) is a close race between Ryder (versatility plus), Higgins (future Captain), Kovalev (who is basically a Ferrari idling along in 2nd gear), and Saku (afterall he still receives the icetime of a #1 centreman)!
...I suppose though that one needs to be the winner - so far, Kovalev is my pick ONLY because when he got injured the dive began!!! He sure is a dog though when he wants to be!
