About Koivu(again)

Here are my three points on Koivu:

1. He is the habs best player, consistent both offensively and defensively. I mean let's get real.

2. Should he be Captain. Of course. He leads with on ice performance. It's one thing to yak away in the dresssing room, but another thing to actually prove it on the ice. Rivet is likely the only other possible "c". Anyone who can't see that Koivu should have the "C", has either political or personal reasons. Certainly not hockey related.

3. Will Koivu be a hab next year? I don't think so and here is why. He will likely want 4-5 mil/yr over 4 years. When he plays, he is worth that. He performs game in and game out without a shread of help on the second line. BUT, he does get injured so I supect Gainey factors that in and offers 4mil/2 years. Now if I'm koivu, I would want a chance to win the cup at some point in my career. Not gonna happen with the Habs any time soon due to shoddy drafting and bonehead vision like actually thinking Ribero was usefull. He knows how sad the back-up support offensively is in Montreal. And that is not gonna change with Higgins, Chipchura or Plekanec( all good players but not real offensive threats).

He can extend his career just by playing on a team with a REAL second line center( Or he becomes the second line center---whatever). He would not have to carry the entire load and thus get injured less. And who could blame him if he does leave? He is worth the money to a team positioned to take a cup run. Trust me, teams like Carolina, Colorado, Calgary, Vancouver, Nashville, would drool to have him in the line-up... I hope I'm wrong on this one but I guess time will tell...

You  forgot to mention the main reason why he along with others might not sign here, the fickle fans in Montreal and the french media.

Any fan who would boo Saks last year after the Ribs/Saks incident doesn't deserve to be a fan of the Habs. The other factor is the french media who isn't happy that Sak hasn't learned french to give them interviews.

Look we can all say wheat we want. I love Saku. But too much ice time and trying to play against Centres twice his size have taken its toll. He plays alot better when he is rested and it showed on this road trip. He gets tired (plus he refuses to coast like alot of players). He would be a great second line center on a team with more depth. But lets not put the man on a pededstal. When it comes time to a contract, Saku will look after Saku..WHEREEVER he goes. This is a business boys. He may bleed red white and blue but will want to see the green come contract time.
