Whichever way the Saku domino falls will pretty much dictate how the Habs will look going forward!
Can anyone honestly see Craig Rivet staying with the Habs if his little buddy is either traded or lost as a UFA? And-o suggests then, that the fate of Saku and Craig with the Canadiens are one and the same!
Also, assuming a deal is not in place prior to the March 9th trade deadline, who would take a chance of losing the captain for nothing at the end of the season? And-o therefore believes that Gainey’s hand will be forced (one way or the other) before the trade deadline. In fact, given the increasing sense of urgency surrounding the Habs slippage in the standings, And-o believes Gainey will quite likely act BEFORE the Olympic Break in order to maintain some calm and order for the stretch run!
…so, any day now…at any time…And-o expects a move…a significant move that will reveal what Gainey’s intentions are for this team for years to come!
Is Gainey content to keep Saku and Craig and add-on players around the likes of Theodore, Markov, Souray, Komisarek, Ryder, Higgins, Plekanecs, etc.? Or, is Gainey looking to re-allocate the dollars to other available players or UFA’s???
Perhaps the most important question then is this…could Gainey get better returns for $7-$8 million USD per season (which is the likely cost for both players next season)???
And-o would argue that he could identify numerous upcoming UFA’s that could EASILY replace Craig and Saku…ESPECIALLY for $7-$8 million! At any rate, the above questions make for some interesting debate…but they should soon come to a head!!!
…I actually think that this debate might be THE ultimate and underlying problem in the Montreal dressing room!
Methinks that the make or break will be the length of the deal. If Koivu continues to insist on a 3 year deal Gainey will walk. And I can see both sides. From Sak's point he is looking for security with a longer deal. From Gainey's point of view he does not want to give Saks a long term deal given his injury history and, sadly to say, the potential that he may have a cancer relapse. Anyway, for what it is worth..I think that it will come down to Saks' inistence on a 3 year deal. He is well aware that there ARE teams out there who will give him a long term deal if Gainey will not.

I'm as confused as a starving baby in a topless bar!
Bob Gainey is reluctant to make a move. What is he going to address? Defense?? offence?? get a faceoff guy? or a goalie?
When asked if he was going to pull the trigger on a trade soon, Bob says? "What am i going to address?" he says then he asks the reporter, "Do you have a solution?" Bob thinks this is a great group of players who are all playing non determined hockey. He feels this team can play just as good as ottawa. He also said "why trade now???" "iam not panicking, we are only 6 points out 6th place"
in my opinion, there is just that something that tells me Gainey always does the right thing. i dont know , its a gut feeling i guess
i cant see bg giving saks and rivet more than 6 mil between them cut it anyway you want boys but thats all your getting . i even think thats a little high 3.25for saks 2.25 for rivet , 3 years each , club option on the 3rd year.
Rivet is already signed for the next couple of years, will anyone else take him at his current salary. I don't think so, he will be here for those 2 years.
I think if they decide to let Saku go then the team will definetly be going into rebuild phase. They might do a firesale which as it looks right now might not be a bad thing, i.e. to start from scratch.
