Gainey was calling shots
Permalink Closed

Something has become very clear to me (and to many observers) the last few games. Bob Gainey has been calling the personell shots, even before he took over the coaching reins. Case in point. Radek Bonk. I recall many on this board dissing CJ because he would go back to Bonk after he made a terrible error. This past Saturday, Bonk was B-R-U-T-A-L. In fact, the "defensive specialist" cost the habs the second goal when he allowed little Burrows  to muscle him off the puck and then felt it too much bother to bother chasing him. How is he punished? Gainey gives him more ice time!!! Do you think it is possible that Julien was being TOLD who to play? Duhhh... Do you think it will be possible that Gainey will be telling his pal Carbo who to play when he takes over? Does Ethyl Kennedy have a closet full of black dresses?

Same with Theo. Julien finally had to bench Theo because Huet was outplaying him..not by a little bit..but by a TON! Quite obviously Gainey disagreed with this because his first move as head coach was to overturn Julien's decision and put Theo back in. I am surprised he even took him out after 5 goals on Saturday.

What this tells me is this. Gainey seems to be more concerened with justifying to the fans the trades he has made and the overinflated contracts he has signed players to, than he does in improving the team. By continuing to play Bonk and Theo he is simply proving my point. He is hoping that these 2 guys (among others) will somehow miraculously come around if he keeps playing them. In my opinion, a GM needs to worry about being a GM and allow the coach to coach. You effectively tie the coach's hands when you meddle in the lineup. In the meantime, Bob's prayer for redemption and crediibility drags the team's playoff hopes and, ultimately, season, down the sewer.  Barry, that really makes sense! He's showing his arogant side rather than doing what's best to give your team a chance to win!
