Calling all Newbies!
Permalink Closed

It seems that the posting population has grown exponentially in the past few months - mainly since the new format.  Lots of newcomers - and that's a good thing, as Martha would say.

Since I'm the nosy one, I like to know about the poster behind the avatar, but now there are so  many of us, I don't know much about most of you anymore.

So how about a few tidbits of personal information from those of you who have been posting for less than a year?  (Where from, what you do, etc.)  OK?

Okay, I'll go first.  After all, even God hates a coward.

Name: Tom Palko

Date of Birth: March 9, 1971 - Windsor, Ontario

Education:  Resources Drilling and Blasting Technician (Sir Sanford Fleming College - Frost Campus)

Occupation:  Property Manager with a medium sized aggregate company.  Aggreagates are crushed stone and sand and gravel.  In the past I have been a water well driller (and helper), a soil investigations driller (and helper), tug-boat deck hand, loader operator, blaster and quarry foreman.

Little about myself:  Married (nearly 12 years, she is also a Habs fan).  3 boys - Thomas (9-more on him below), Mitchel (7) and Jacob (4).  Live in Southern Ontario, work in Burlington, ON.

Why I'm a Habs Fan:  Back in the early 70's, when I started school, the first group of friends that I had were big hockey fans.  This was my first exposure to hockey as my parents didn't care for the game.  At that time, the Habs were the defending Stanley Cup champs, so that is who I began to root for.  There you go, I am admitting to being a bandwagonner.

A small bit of proof that we (my wife and I) are Habs fans.  Flashback to November, 1996.  My wife is 7+ months along with our first child (the aforementioned Thomas).  We learn that our child is a boy.  Immediately my wife suggests Patrick.  Immediately, I agree.  Fast forward to  mid-December, 1996, there is a trade that perhaps some of you may have heard of.  Immediately, our sons name will no longer be Patrick.  How he actually got his name is another story altogether.

I was born and raised in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.  I now live in Calgary, Alberta.  I am a youth and family counsellor for now, i am actually just waiting on another job as a correctional officer here in calgary at one of the jails. I've been doing security work and bouncing since i was 19 years old.  I am 24 years old now....and LOVE hockey, every since i was probably 4 years old i've been watching the habs on the good ole french channel.  I've only been to 2 live games, both here in calgary.  (both habs, one 5 years ago, and the second a week ago)  I always liked the average, low paid players who put alot into the team.....scott thornton(back in the day), steve begin, chris higgins, guys like that, but i will say, i am a Ribs fan...i also am a big fan of football and baseball...i play competitive softball in the summer and use to play football, just for fun tho... i am single as of a week ago, (she likes Boston, that will never work for me) and no kids, but i live with my sister, her husband and my 1 yr old niece....thats pretty much it guys and gals....

My name is Rob.  I am from the Niagara Region in Ontario.  I am a tool and die maker, married with 1 litte girl.  Played competitive hockey most of my life, and have been an avid habs fan since I can remember.  I like Alex Kovalev, and despise Jose Theodore.

Here goes,

My name is Chris and i am 20 years old. I live in the North-East end of Montreal, St. Leo for those of you who are from around here. Like Caper, i'm recently single...about a week aswell to be exact. I am currently a web designer full time and i help out here and there with the family business which is in the food industry. I used to play hockey and baseball competitively but now i basically just play the weekly scrim with a few buddies at a rented high school gym...i am also a racquetball addict.

I've been a habs fan all my life seeing as my father used to work at the old forum. I got the chance to meet many former Habs when i was little. I wish i was just a little older so i could have appreciated the significance of having a chat with the likes of such Habs legends even more than i did back then! I've also had the chance to chat a little with Mike Ribeiro on the way back from a trip last summer. He's a classy guy, yes even with the loafers.

I'm not technically a newbie since I used to post on the old board under the name "Théo", but I might as well go anyway since a lot of you might not know me too well.

My name is Matt and I'm 16 (17 in April). I live in Toronto, and I have been a huge Habs fan all my life. My favorite players in recent memory have been Saku Koivu, Jose Theodore, Mark Recchi, Vincent Damphousse, Pierre Turgeon, and Patrick Roy to name a few. So yes, that's right, I'm another fan on this board who likes Saks and Theo. Here in Toronto, it's not easy to be a Habs fan with all of the Leafs fans everywhere, but somehow I get by.

Obviously since I'm 16, I don't have a proper job, so I'm a student. Curently in grade 11 in high school, taking math and sciences mostly. I play the alto saxophone in my school's band, and I also compete in track and field every year (and have been doing so since grade 4).

That's about all I can think of for now.

I'm originally from Montreal (something about a bomb in our neighbourhood in '69 sent us packing), then to Brooklyn via Vancouver, Toronto and London...

I was born the year before the Leafs last won a cup....

I was, until recently, a professional touring musician, but now I'm a graphics designer, so I'm getting sneakily paid while I make all the stupid photoons (better make sure no one can see my monitor on that one), but I work fast on the real jobs, so I'm not really stickin' it to the man...

I like roasting meat, because it gives me an excuse to drink a whole bottle of wine while cooking, which is hard to do making a grilled cheese. And always Guinness for the game...ahhhhh, Guinness...

Always loved the Habs, even when I was a teenager in England, and had to phone people at the embassy to find out scores (no cable or internet back then for you sprouts), not sure you can still do that...

I'm rapidly turning into an old hockey curmudgeon (you could see their faces back then without the helmets, etc, etc, blah blah, etc)

My childhood dream of an all-Welsh speaking Canada seems to be just a dream now, but getting the Queen off the money might not be....

Love MSG, but hate going to games there now, as all the good seats are taken up by corporate lawyer types with their bimbo-du-jour. Favorite thing I overheard there: Bimbo - "What's that thing?" Corporate lawyer - "It's a goalie bat". No kidding. Have a feeling she didn't know the meaning of "Too many men" either...

Thinking of moving back to Canada so I don't have to pay to see Don Cherry, and can afford the knee operation that rainy days like this make me know I'll need...

Lurking for ages before posting, as the old format didn't work smoothly with my Macintosh...

love the way and-o refuses to answer me, putting the ignore in ignorant...(just kidding.. jeez)

And in case I didn't mention it, GO HABS GO!!!

I'm a Montrealer living in Toronto, practicing law as a civil litigator. Twenty-eight. I grew up in Montreal and will always be a Montrealer. I figure that I'll spread the propeganda from inside enemy lines. I will be at the game on Saturday night.

Man did I love the Forum. Especially those hotdogs. Such a shame that those grills didn't make it over to the Bell Centre (Molson Centre at the time). Speaking of the Molson Centre, I remember attending to the Habs' first home game in that building. What a cold feeling. Cushy seats, extra-jumbo jumbotron, flashy lights, booming sound system -- all of which zapped the energy right out of the crowd. I mean, how could they not have seen it coming??? Montreal isn't some small-market city where hockey has to be dressed-up and dumbed-down ...

Well, at least for a long period, it seemed to all be going downhill (since the Move). St. Patrick, missing the playoffs, poor management. But now, there's more than just hope. Gainey and Carbo. These are guys who know what it means to wear the CH on one's chest. In fairness, the team that they inherited was totally lost. Certain things can't be taught over night. I'm sure that Carbo and Gainey will impart the passion, commitment, and pride required of those who wear the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge.

Well, this Board is just awesome. Fans from all over who share a unique passion. My wife thinks that I'm crazy because I put on a Habs jersey and cap just to watch the game from my couch. I tried the "power in numbers" approach by telling her about the members of this Board -- for some reason, that didn't bring me much credibility.

Great post Jonny.  I see a lot of similarities in your situation with those if us who must suffer through a season of Bruins hockey.  Same deal with the old Boston Garden too.  Used to be the best place on planet earth to watch a game, especially one between the Habs and B's.  Now it's like any building anywhere.  Could be watching a game in Topeka, Kansas instead of in Boston.

ROCK 'N ROLL!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome! Record a Gohabs! song and post it up here! I play guitar, but mostly made the bucks with all the Wizard of Oz keyboard gear that bands need these days to sound like they do on MTV (Miss Simpson to the red courtesy phone) . All the fake stuff gets depressing after a while, most definetly not rock n roll!
