On the way home from work today I was listening to the team 990 and they had Pat Hickey and Bill Beacon along with Mitch Melnick on the Blue Line. They talk about the Habs, Pat and Bill are sports writers incase you didn't know.
Bill basically stated that he thinks that BG will try to resign him unless Saku is asking too much or the team wants to start rebuilding again. Pat said that money wasn't the problem, it was more the length of the contract that could be an issue. If Saku wants 3 years then it might be acceptable, but longer than this won't fly.
Three MORE years?!?!?!? GAWD! UGGGHHHH...why not just have the in-laws move in and cancel Sundays for a year!? NO WAY...NO WAY! ...try one year with a club option at bargain basement prices. (...and I thought the FAN 590 in Toronto was primarily just crazy talk!)
Bob gainey will sign saku to three years Ando-o. He's smart

The only way I sign this guy to anything resembling a long term contract is to have the contract full of performance clauses including games played. Unless Saks is seeing Ernest Angely, the Baptist preacher who lays the hands on and heals people, I would be scared to tie up a ton of cap money in a player who may only play 40 games a year.

Koviu may not be a number one centerman, but he is far and away the best the Habs have at this point. Despite a perceived diminished value, if he were to test the free agent market he would get a three year deal somewhere. If that happens who do the Canadiens replace him with? It is not exactly news that there are very few players clammoring to come and sign with the Habs. A frenzied media, the french english thing etc etc all dissuade players from signing here.

Well BG knows how to build a winner. You do that by starting with solid competitors. I think you will see BG land a top notch center( Lecavlier or something). And use Koivu as And-0 has suggested in the past---as a second line center. Then he would be less likely to be injured because he would take less of the heat.
Point being that Koivu is a rare bread in today's NHL. A feiry competitor who prefers winning to money. The guy plays balls out every game, and that's a Bob Gainey guy, He won't just "let" him go.
Next year you will no longer see Ribby in a habs uniform. We will somehow land a big time center. Koivu will still bleed the red/white/blue. We will have a power forwrd added somehow(either from within or through free agency). But Koivu will still be here.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. With the whole new salary cap system GM's will be less apt to re-sign free agents. The reason is that let's say they let Saks go to another team. In the past it would be bad because you felt that you were losing a player and getting nothing in return. Now in the new system, if you cannot come to terms, you then have that much money in cap room to spend on another free agent.. You are right, he will get a 3 year deal elsewhere and rightly so. That is how the market goes. Saks is a good player and I like him. If I could feel comfortable with his injury woes I would be more apt to sign him. But that is only my opinion. BG is the guy signing the checks.

If BG sings Koivu more than 2 years it have to be less than 2-2,5 per year. My opinion is that 3 year and 2mil per year. Clauses are 2nd line center and maybe lose the "C" off the jersey and no more playing time than 15min per game, maybe then he could play whole season without injuries.
And he will agree on these terms because he is Habs guy in his heart. If he is not willing to agree on these terms it is better to trade him off.
Saku will get between 3 and 4 million a year. I would like the figure to be closer to 3 million so we can add other players to the mix. We need to add to Saku not get rid of him.
