Will Gainey make a trade this month or before trading deadline?

I ask this because it will tell us a great deal of what Gainey's expectations are! If he does this month, it is because he wants to make the playoffs and compete now!

If he waits, it's because he is rebuilding and will start trying to unload underachievers. Also he will not resign Koivu for next season! Of course I'm assuming at trading deadline with this current roster, we are not going to the playoffs dances!

I say yes to this month! He will make at least one significant trade that will effect the core of the team or some smaller trades in hopes that it shakes the team up enough to compete!

Yes, he has no choice.  They are tanking HUGE!!!!  I predict Theo straight-up or a Ribs/(insert player) package.

For those looking for a quick trade, Milbury is no longer GM in NYI.  I think Gainey will only make a trade that makes sense for the mid-long term while still not giving up on this season.  Look at the itchy-trigger-finger trades and how they hurt teams.  NYI lost Chara, Redden, Bertuzzi, Luongo and a bunch of other because Milbury made a trade without much care (it seems.)  When Gainey makes a trade, it will only be for the benefit of the team.  As for Koivu yet to be resigned, well, there is plenty of time for that as there are more pressing things going on.  More than likely, Koivu will be resigned (at a lower price, I imagine) but I think Gainey wants to take care of stuff first while at the same time evaluate Koivu's value.

I know that you are using Milbury as an example; however, Chara, Redden, Bertuzzi and Luongo had not nearly developed into the players they are today.  Chara was a big freak, Bertuzzi was a nobody and so was Redden.  Granted he probably gave up on them too soon (just like McCabe).

So if anything is to be learned, Gainey should not jump in and deal raw young talent, which is what some teams may want in return for a proven goal scorer or a workhorse, physical defenceman (both of which we could use!).  The Habs are lucky to have some young guys who look pretty good this year and have not looked out of place. I got off topic a little there...

Good points but I still haven't put your answer together Figaro. Will the trade be this month?

Yes, I smell trade.  Hard not to, although the Habs stink so bad lately.
