Start the Season Over

Am I the only one who believes that the team we have now (with the addition of 1 defenseman who can move the puck) is good enough to contend for the Cup? With all the trade talk, it seems as if everybody is looking elsewhere for salvation.

The team we began the season so well with is now back together and for the most part healthy. They just aren't playing as a team -- and other teams are. Granted, we won a lot of close games that could've gone either way early in the year. But that's what good teams do -- they out-hustle and out-work opponents. Lately we just haven't been doing that.

I know that CJ explained away some of those early wins by saying that our opponents were still getting their skating legs then. But the bottom line is, we did what it took to win. We can do that again, I think -- but not if a lot of ugly trade rumors are hanging over everybody's heads.

If BG is going to make a move, I hope he does it soon and then tells the boys that he's done -- that what we have is what we're going into the playoffs with. Then everyone can get down to doing what it is that served them so well early in the season.

Theo WILL come back. The Brothers K WILL regain their offensive edge. Our younger players WILL keep getting better. Even Ribs, given a vote of confidence, WILL contribute to the team's success again if he's still around.

I really believe that all those early-season games were a harbinger of a great year to come. It just got detoured by some sloppy defensive play, inadequate goaltending, and two or three key injuries. The Habs are back now, though. They've won 1 in a row! Tonight in Denver they're going to show us that they're for real. Let's give all of them the support they deserve.

Hey Park Slope! Notice I didn't say they could WIN the Cup with today's team. Only contend!

Good post Desi. I do not share your optimism as far as competing for a cup. My view has not changed since September and training camp, even when we went on a roll. W e have a decent nucleus however and some talent on the farm that needs time to develop. I think management felt that guys like KoStytsyn were not quite ready in October and that is why Dagenais was kept for awhile.  We have some key holes to plug right now. Center ice and another dman. And whether Theo or Huet or Danis plays goal for us we need some consistency in that position. But I still feel we have a bright future and should compete for  aplayoff spot.

I think we've got most of the major pieces needed to contend.  I think maybe a lack of experience and the lingering sense of "lack of team synergy" is all there is to it.  Although I'm not against making a trade that fits the team, I hate band-aid trades (where you lose that player in a few months...rent-a-player.)

Defien contend. If you mean they can make the playoffs and put forths a strong push, sure...but this team is not a Conference Finals team....if all the players played to their full potential then yes, because on paper we have a pretty damn good team, they just arent playing well.

Ooops! I'm always thinking about getting past the first round, but if you mean contending, as in get in the playoffs, sure, but if you mean having a run at conference finals - not a chance this year.

Park Slope! Only slimy lawyers and corporate thieves live there, way outta my price range! Decent 1-bedroom apartments with no view starting at US$500,000 to buy, or $2000/month to rent. Yikes!

I forgot -- you're a Williamsburg guy, right? Fewer lawyers to worry about there, for sure.

By contend, I guess I mean that this team (with that new, outstanding defenseman I mentioned) should have what it takes to a) make the playoffs, b) make it past the first round, and c) if they play their best, make it to the conference finals as they did a couple years ago. For this to happen, clearly they've got to move up in the conference standings a great deal, so as not to have to play a highly-seeded team. But with effort (and sharper goaltending) I think they can do that. They better -- or management may steal that pfutting Michel Therrien from Pittsburg and bring him in to whack them around a little, or worse -- somebody else like that that blfooking Mike Keanan!

I agree, I posted that earlier that it will be a struggle to make the playoffs. I keep saying ok we lost but we will be better for the next game. I am still waiting. When will this team get motivated and get it together???
