Just consider how many guys the Habs presently have on the roster capable of playing Centre (Koivu, Ribiero, Bonk, Begin, Plekanec, Bulis, Murray, Lapierre, Locke and Urquhart).  Only one shoots right-handed (Lapierre).

Of this group, there is precious little in the way of size and grit (less with size, grit AND bonafide NHL talent).  Not one could be classed as a pure goal scorer…and not one ranks amongst the league leaders in assists or points.

Furthermore, this group would be hard pressed to play a sustained physical game (especially in the playoffs) without taking dumb-dumb penalties (see Steve Begin).

Also, when the sticks and elbows get elevated between whistles, this group shows all the collective firepower of a really mad poodle!  In fact, only Begin, Murray…and maybe Lapierre have a bite to match their bark!

So, as far as And-o is concerned, if the Habs are serious about winning and truly being competitive on a nightly basis over an 82 game schedule, it is time to face facts – THIS TEAM NEEDS TO FILL THE CENTRE OF THE DONUT!

Is this not obvious???  Is And-o dead wrong here???  Is an elite (preferably right-handed shooting) centreman NOT the number one need in Montreal…STILL???

C’mon guys!  Gainey has LOADS of similar type forwards that would appeal to several teams…time to get a deal done!  It can’t be this difficult.

Thing is, the player you seek, And-o, is hard as hell to come by. I'm sure Gainey is aware that Koivu and one of Pleks, Bulis, Ribeiro or Bonk is hardly a good top-two centre combo. But it may be what we're stuck with until some of our young talent develops into marketable property. I like Julien, but I feel like he (like so many Habs coaches since Perron) was not good with our youth, and now Perezhogin has lost his confidence, and Komisarek seems to have partially done so as well.

Again, if you can't fill 30 teams with great players, then what's the point in diluting the broth?

 Well thought out post And-o!

Does Gainey want to win now or is he still rebuilding! What is so obvious to us has to be observed by him! Why has he not addressed this as a GM with the Habs! He has had ample opportunity to do this in his tenure! If he can spend big bucks on a player who has shown over his career the potential to float(Kovy), why can he not spend money on a BIG need!

...yeah, And-o has pretty much had enough of the Smurf approach!

Gainey should have re-signed Jim Dowd and dealt away 2 or 3 of the smaller "skilled" centres (along with a prospect) for a blue-chip centreman with size and grit!

No more excuses.

Question for you And-o. I know that Habs lack size but why center why not winger who can play hard tackling hockey and can score a goal and have size? (and I don´t mean Dagenais) what is with you and those big sized centermans?

Also midsized 1st line center who is bonafide playmaker.

This is daydream to find both I know, but whichever BG can find and same time he has to find that fool who wants to give away such piece of gold, because we have nothing to give except maybe Bulis, Koivu, Ribs, Bonk, Zednik and that isn´t much. That isn´t easy job What BG got to do.

Brawls between the whistles, we have couple of guys in the farm who woulld gladly give the helping hand.
