Depth-Or Lack Thereof

I have been following the Leafs rise for the past couple of weeks and have come up with some pretty sobering thoughts for Habs fans. For instance. Bryan McCabe, a defenceman, has 47 points so far. Our top scorer is a Center, Koivu, with 29 points. I believe that is somewhere around 60th in the league. Toronto has 3 scorers in the top 50 including MCabe who is hovering arond 10th. Any idea what that does to your Power Play? Our best producing defenceman is Markov with 23 points. It is little wonder we are in trouble. That is a very sobering stat.

Our second line of Dagenais/Ribs/Ryder are a collective -23! (Thank God for Ryder's 17 goals). Surprisingly the much maligned Dagenais has a minus 6, the best of the 3 (Ribiero minus 10, Ryder minus7). Collectively Toronto's second line (had to round it off because Lindros has been out) is a -2. Goaltending, Theodore is now 26th in the league. He has the dubious distinction of having 2 stats that are not where an NHL goalie wants to be. His GAA is over 3.00 and his save percentage is under 900. (No I am not bashing Theo. Just pointing out that he needs to be better). Our goalie needs to be better than the 26th ranked keeper in the league folks. For comparision, Toronto's backup goalie , Telquist has a goals against average of 2.48 and a save percentage of .919. Belfour's season stats are not great but keep in mind in the last 4 games the Eagle has a 1.96 GAA and a .931 save percentage. Says alot about the Leafs turnaround don't it?

Tonite we get the "big line" back.  I am unsure if this is the right move Claude (yes I do disagree with him alot). I know what he is trying to do. He is trying to spark the team the best way he can and hopefully he can do it. However when you see how the stats fall to pieces after that first line I wonder if we are not better off seperating those guys? Spreading the wealth as it were.  But I think at this point CJ is just looking for a spark..any spark. And maybe that will give the other guys a boost.

But when you look at the numbers between ourselves and the Leafs it is little wonder they have blown by us. With not even one guy in the top 5o in league scoring and a Toronto dman doubling our best scoring forward in points it puts things in perspective.

When all three have been healthy at the same time this year, have they played on different lines?  If so, how did the resulting lines work out?

As far as this being the right move, wouldn't it be nice to have a least one line producing, instead of what we have seen lately, which is one player on each line trying to do it all?

There are 2 schools of thought on that and I think that right now he is going with the safest. Play the line together that has a history of producing. Julien said something interesting yesterday after practice. When asked why some of the youngsters were not playing much he said "Right now we are playing for the present and not the future. We are not in a position to worry about the future right now"

I think the difference here is that the Leafs players are stepping up and we haven't had anyone step up as of yet.

in 2003/04 we had Souray playing great and Ryder was on fire. This year other then Koivu and Kovy had nothing.

Guys need to step up their game. I think Souray has started to, let's see who's next.

You found my point exactly John. The stats do not lie. We just CAN NOT compete with no one in the top 60 in scoring and a below par goalie. It is a deadly combination.  I am hoping that the big line being back together along with the demotion of perez and some fresh blood will shake up some guys. Also I know that practice yesterday was no daycare.
