Guys and Ladies- I have decided to take a break from posting on Go Habs for awhile for the simple reason is that it is becoming exhausting (and really not alot of fun) to have to come on here and continuously defend a very good coach. To be honest, reading comments like "the guy is a Moron" and "Let's put this guy out of his misery" being said about a very good friend of mine and a guy who has been working 18 hour days trying to right this ship is not something I care to read anymore.
I do respect this forum and everyone's right to express their opinions and for that reason I feel it better to take a step back until the dust settles and we have a new coach or the present one rights the ship. I do wish however, that some people on here would do some research instead of just spouting off things about this guys lack of ability or experience. For example:
That is what we get for hiring a "rookie coach". Claude Julien came to Montreal with more experience than many of his predecessors and highly respected. Did he have NHL experience? No. But if you take a look, over 83% of coach's hired in teh NHL come up through the ranks. Junior, then AHL, then NHL. Julien did not come from nowhere. He coached the National under 16, under 18 and under 20 programs, a Memorial Cup Champion and an AHL finalist. He was also asked to speak last year at a Russian Hockey Federation symposium, the first North American coach ever asked to do so. I ask what constitutes experience? Having coached an NHL team and been fired? At any rate, I guess if Julien does get fired and goes elsewhere, he will no longer have to listen to the "that's what w eget for hiring a rookie coach" theory. Just like Therrien does not have to now that he is in Pittsburgh. He has already coached and been fired at the NHL level. No longer a rookie.
"This team has no direction or system"- 14th ranked power play (only percentage points out of 8th). The team has been crippled at a crucial position all year and still manages to kill of alot of penalties and with no one in the top 30 in league scoring, hover around the top 10 in the PP. Not bad for not having a coach. The poor performance as of late on the PK is indicative of a slow footed defence and too many 5 0n 3's
"Other teams win with guys out"- absolutely. But I have looked at every roster in the league at the center ice position, and the habs, without a doubt, are the weakest team down the middle right now and have been for a month. Anyone who knows hockey knows how absoluetly crucial that position is. It is second only to goaltending. Let's go to Pat Quinn and tell him that we are going to take away Sundin, Lindros and lets say Stajan for over a month and ask him how he felt about his chances. Yes I get tired of using this reason as an "excuse". But if you coach and know the game, you will understand where I am coming from
"Radek Bonk has been put in a position by Julien where his offensive talents are not being utilized"- WHAT Offensive talents pray tell? The guy has not scored since Shaquille O'Neil wore a size 5. before he did us all a favor and hurt his groin he was used extensively in situations where he could score, power play, etc. So much for the big stud centerman being our saviour.
He does not have the team prepared to play at the start of a game. I ask you how pray tell does he do this? I go in before the game when I coach and emphasize how important it is that we get off to a good start. Go over the game plan. But when that puck drops it is up to the guys on skates. Not me.
At any rate I have made all of these points time and time again. And I will tell you that regardless of who the coach in Montreal was right now, I would be making the same points. I am a habs fan first an foremost and want the team to succeed. If I felt that coaching was the issue I would be the first to say can the man. I am going to step aside and leave that debate to you guys. All I ask is that you look at some facts and not say things that cannot be backed up by facts.
Julien right now is a victim of his own success. Had they been a mediocre team to start the season expectations would not have been raised and you would all thing he was a great guy. He was a "great coach" we are "Lucky to have him" in October. "This guy is awesome" were the words when he took the team over from Therrien and got them past Boston in the playoffs followed by a 90 point plus season the next year. Now he is a moron and does not knwo what he is doing. Boy, he must have lost it since then.
I can tell you this. The guy has a young baby who he has not seen hardly at all since September. To say he is not working to prepare the team is ludicrous. He has taken to even having a cot moved into his office because he is there most nights until well after midnite. He spends hours upon hours looking at game film. H ecares about this team a great deal. Unfortunately, many of the players under him do not share that same passion. He loves coaching and he loves this team. I spoke with him 3 days ago and his heart is broken that certain individuals on that team (that he has NO choice but to play), are not putting out nor do they care.
This guy is not a "moron". Not an "idiot". Not a "rookie coach". As far as I am concerend he should start using the same approach that many of his "star" players do. Show up before the game and coach. Don't lose any sleep over it. Don;t get worked up. If you lose, you lose. No biggie.

Barry, don't go too far because as many want him gone, many reallize he should stay and not a coaching problem that another coach will fix! That's where I stand. Who can do better with nothing to work with!
Barry, as a relatively new member, I am always looking forward to reading your posts, which are well-written and seem to be well-informed. I share most of your views, particularly with respect to the coaching as well as with the problems -- which start with the on-ice personnel.
It would be a shame for you not to participate, not only because you have great insights and opinions, but also because those opinions need to be featured here.
As you say, a lot of posting has descended in direct correlation with the team's performance. And, yes, a lot of it has become knee-jerk and based on emotion rather than fact.
Just one more reason for you to stick around a while longer.
And as for the clowns who want to be in the gutter, let them stay there, there's no need for you to even look down as you pass them by.
Hey Barry...i know exactly how you feel and you have no idea how nice it was to have you back up a lot of my posts recently. For a while i thought i was the only fan left on this board and even i took my break and came back ready to fight off the anti-theo and saku fans. I've even thought of taking another break but now with you leaving someone has to stay to hold the fort down. I hope you have a nice break and clear your head. I really hope the habs get themselves out of this because i would REALLY hate to see Claude go because his players arent preforming...but then again he hasnt had much to work with. Lets see how things go and i look forward to hearing from ya again soon. GO HABS GO

Well Barry, what can I say? A month from today I'll be landing in Montreal, and I was kind of hoping that you and maybe a couple of the other vets would be in town, but,oh well...I know I've said this before, but me, I'm a fan. A fan can do two things to help the team he loves. Buy a lot of crappy merchandise to help them financially, or go to the games and cheer the team on (or both). The last week or so I've been thinking to myself, god I'm paying all this money to see them and they suck, what a waste. Now I realize that it's now, when the chips are down, that they need people like me in the stands doing everything in their power to help them raise their game. Even if we're losing five zip against Boston I'll be cheering, shouting, singing what ever you over there do to help the team. It's in times of adversity that the true fans show their colors. After all what gives me the right, or any of you, for that matter, to pass judgement on my peers? The time for that will arrive sooner rather than later!

Barry I will miss your invaluable contribution. and i'm not surprised of your decision. I do hope you will continue to visit and hopefully post soon.
Isn't funny, when the team loses, this nastiness has to come out. It's like when in the Forum days people would complain about the organ music when the team slumped. But when the team was winning, who cares what anyone thought.
So I just hope the team finds its winning ways again and real soon this way we can all be happy.
It is amazing the changes that can happen when away for a few days! Well, I certainly feel your frustration Barry, as it too drives me nuts when people post without thinking or without facts. I have learned over time to weed out who is a nay-saying vulture and who isn't, and to mostly ignore those who are. One of the reasons my posting count is low is that I will rarely post on something that is either repeated in other posts, posts just for the sake of seeing your counter go up, or posting to start a fight, etc... There are number of posts I will only glance at and I will usually only open the thread of certain individuals if I see that they have been responded to by others who have a history of thoughtful posts. I will tell you that it has saved me a lot of headaches and it also serves to not encourage those who post nonsense.
I am not trying to be elite or exclusive, as my brain power does not allow me to be that, but I do want to enjoy my experience and get some real insight into the Habs and hockey in general and that means that I am going to go to the posters who give me the most bang for my time. I don't care if I agree or not with the poster, for example; I rarely agree with And-o, but I love his posts and have considered him the Don Cherry/Jack Todd of the board because of the black and white thinking, but ultra-entertaining posts. I also though, love posts from people who really know the game from having played/coached/reffed it. I was born with leg problems that didn't allow me to skate well or for very long periods and my single mom didn't watch hockey, so I only got involved with it late in life and was relegated to street hockey, so I often will use this board to clear away my ignorance, of which there is plenty.
So all this to say that I will miss a poster who has brought me more info in the last couple of years than I had learned in two or three times as many years previously about hockey. Thanks Barry and I hope you come back soon, less stressed and less willing to engage those who would bring you down. Here's hoping that CJ will be here long after you have returned.
Hi barry33 - I hope your sabbitcal (sp) is not too long as I enjoy reading your posts as they are well written and thought out & you do not seem concerned if you get replies to them or not. Some posters it seems want to write something outrageous or conterversial not making alot of sense or thinking them out( fire the coach/trade this/these players and get this/these players back/send players up/down to BullDogs etc. etc.)and then wonder why they do not get replies (I am using a broad brush here) or do get responses & then get slammed a bit but that is their style and they don't seem too mind.......Anyhow hope to be reading you soon. Cheers.
And-o digs Barry33! ...Barry33 stands by his man (no pun intended)! HOWEVER...And-o will state right here and now - Bob Gainey is going to knock this board on it's collective arse's soon! In fact, And-o thinks that the "Cabbage Patch Coach" might stick around...the targeted problem area will be removed though...once and for all! "Timbit" is coming!!!
