Compare the Leafs to the Habs
Permalink Closed

At times I feel that we have an unrealistic and biased view of the talent we have on this team. Since we are all probably the most familiar with the Laffs roster, I would like us to compare what we have compared to them.

  1. Goal- Edge to Toronto- Belfour has outplayed Theo in all head to head meetings and has a significantly better save percentage. Add to it the fact that Telquist has played well in every appearance (as opposed to the fact that we do not even play our backup)

  2. Defence- Edge to Toronto- McCabe will win the Norris this year. Kaberle is a legitimate PP quarterback and set up man. Klee is not fancy but does not make many mistakes.

  3. Forwards- Even- when we have all of our guys I say we match up well with our forwards. I would give a slight edge to Toronto because of their size up front. O'neill was a good pick up and when Lindros is healthy he has shown he can still play.  Allison has proven to be a disappointment as I expected. Tucker is a very valuable second line player. And they have toughness in Belak and Domi.

  4. Coaching- Edge to Toronto- as much as I hate Quinn, his experience shows at times and he has a nack of doing alot with little.

  5. Power Play- 3 weeks ago I would have said Toronto hands down.  But they have fallen on hard times lately and for whatever reason., The Habs are 7th in the league without Kovy and Koivu (this in spite of having no coaching).  McCabe has been deadly on the point though and Kaberle moves the puck better than anything we have.

  6. Penalty Kill- Edge Habs- Mostly because we have had so much practice lol. Actually one place we DO have depth are in defensive forwards (and no And) , Julien did not turn these guys into defensive specialists, they were that way before they got to Hab Land). Begin, Sundstrom, Bulis and Bonk.

Great analysis, barry.

Now could we see the other 28 teams?  And could we have today, please?

Great post. I'm just replying to shove it back up the board, as I don't think it was seen enough. Too many original posts about canning CJ will have that effect.

I agree, Toronto is definitely stronger than the Habs in certain area's.  That's why it's even more imperative that Mtl bring a solid effort for a full 60 minutes (that includes goaltending) on most, if not every night.  This team isn't good enough talent wise to have a few players take the night off and expect to win.  There's a handful of players I'd like to see out of Montreal, but obviously Gainey needs a dancing partner to make any sort of deal.

Habhead- of course I wrote this post the day that belfour looks horrible and the Laffs get blasted 8-2. I guess that is why I do not buy lotto tickets. I di dwatch some of that game last night and I will say that they missed Lindros and (as much as it pains me to say it) Domi. That was a big presence missing from the lineup against Ottawa. And Belfour..well for all those pooping on Theo I suggest you watch the highlites of that game last night. I heard Belfour tried to commit suicide after the game by jumping in front of a train but it went between his legs.

Yes, I saw that game too.  Belfour looked horrible, much worse than Theo has ever looked this year.  Lindros was really jacked up at the beginning of the year to play in Toronto, but he hasn't played that well lately.  Granted, he definitely does add some presence to the Leaf lineup.

The Sens seem to be in Toronto's heads now, it appears this is the year they'll handle the Leafs quite easily if they meet in the playoffs.  But then again, there's still a long way to go and injuries can certainly play a part down the road.

Toronto needs to continue their (slight) youth movement and continue jettisoning old guys. Next it should be Allison and Belfour, who probably doesn't have much left.

I honestly think the Habs have as much straight-up talent as the Leafs. We definitely have more speed. It's just that our guys are very inexperienced. I think Kovalev-Koivu-Zednik is as good as the Sundin line when we're healthy.

And Theo is playing pretty well lately, even when hurt. The last two times I've seen Belfour play he's looked AWFUL.

Toronto's major weakness is coaching... Pat Quinn has no idea how to develop youth. They have some real talent in Wellwoood and Coliacovo, but yet Domi still gets icetime!
