Having watched Gretzky coach a couple games, I am now passing the crown for leagues' biggest whiner to Whine Gretzky. Now c'mon Pat Quinn, you gave it a valient effort and have really held the crown since Pat Burns stepped down. But it is time to let go and hand it over to "The Great One". Because when it comes to screaming at officials, throwing tantrums, and allowing his team to become completely focussed on officiating, rather than the task at hand, Gretz is in a class of his own.
I read Bruce Hood's book (for your youngsters Hoody was an official for many years in the NHL and a damn good one). He devoted a chapter to the players he respected the least and who gave him the most grief after every call. Guess who was number one? Gretzky. I think maybe Wayne feels that because of his greatness and reputation that perhaps his team should be afforded special treatment. If you watched closely last night you would see the Coyotes lose focus when they needed it most. Whine questioned every call to the point that he had his team believing they had no hope to come back because the officials were out to get them. I have said it before. I will take Juliens calm and cool approach to ref'ing any day. He keeps the guys focused on the task at hand.
Remember the story about the boy who cried wolf? Gretzky and Quinn fall into that category. When you dispute and holler about every call against you, it would seem to call your credibility into question. A coach like Julien who only gets upset when it is really warranted, woudl seem to have a better chance of getting a sympathetic ear from the refs IMHO.

I might get burned at the stake here, but I always liked Mario bettter than Wayne. Bug Mario, and you're going to get a smack in the chops right back. Wayne? Better get Jeff Beukeboom out of the garage to come and sort out the problem.
He may have the stats, but he's always been a whinger in my book, one that's had the luxury of great teammates to back him up. But then again, Esa Tikkanen still ranks as my all time fav, so what do I know?
Barry, I wanted to post that about Gretzky some time ago. I have watched him during a number of games now and he is a constant whiner. I was afriad if I posted it that I would be criticized because he was one of the players in the catagory of Lafluer (one of Canadas greats) . I thought it would not go over very well. But, since you have posted it I just added my 3 cents worth Whine Gretsky
Gretzky has a right to whine, like any other coach that looses a game. Frankly (I read this on another post here today) the refs somewhat were on "our side"...I saw a lot of stuff go down that could've been called. I often heard CJ complain about reffing at the press after the game. Gretzky whined, so what. CJ whines, Pat Quinn whines, Mario le Magnifique whines...everybody whines. Bunch of whiners.

Wow! Are you sure you have the right sport? There's a huge difference when Mario gets in the face of a ref and when Wayne just gets that "My french fries are the wrong shape" look on his face. He's had way too much smoke blown up his keester for my likes, and it shows. You would have thought all that time with Messier (also a whiner in your books?) would have rubbed off.
