Mario says no new arena, no team. Kansas City is interested.

Inspirational stuff. Kansas City is a proven market for hockey, just ask the Devils, they used to play there.

When is the league going to get the idea that using hockey teams to anchor real estate deals is only going to weaken the value of their "product"? And when are fans going to get fed up that their sport has been hijacked by American fat-cats, who neither know or care about the game.

Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Halifax, Quebec and Hamilton are all bigger than Green Bay is. So are Moncton and St. John for that matter. They would have great fans, and could sustain a reasonable arena. The NFL would be a sadder place without the Packers. It's part of the character of the league.

Anybody remember the Shreveport, Louisiana CFL team?

Did you say Halifax?!?!?!  Bring 'em on!!  Do you think Sidney and Co. can fill a rink over here?  Not if there are 40,000 seats or more! But 20,000 would not be a problem.  Actually, Moncton would be a better choice.  Halifax is bigger by itself, but Moncton has a greater population draw within 3 hours' drive.

Moncton? Nobody really wants to go to Moncton though. From a PEI point of view, if I was going to drive to watch a game, I'd rather go to Halifax and make a fun vacation out of it.

Unfortunately, it's not just about the fans anymore... It's about TV rights. If there is no new TV market, there is no new team. Hamilton never got a team because of overlapping TV markets with Toronto and Buffalo. Money makes the puck drop my friends... If Moncton is a Habs market, then no team.

Perhaps, but that's why I said "3 hours' drive" (which Charlottetown is not re: Halifax).  This radius would encompass Halifax, Charlottetown, Saint John, Fredericton, Miramichi, Bathurst, etc. - all places (except Halifax itself) that are more than three hours from Halifax.

Winnipeg then, or 'Toon, as long as it's not a city where football rules and hockey's a strange sideshow designed to get a shopping mall and condos built while rooking taxpayers for a new arena

Ahhhh - shoulda called this topic "March of the Penguins"

No, they won't leave.

Have it from a knowledgeable guy (and arent they all knowledgeable?! ..at least in Pittsburgh though...

..that apparently they requested funds for a new arean at the same time the city was building one for 2 other sports stadiums..

When the time comes they will get their stadium, but as I read a quote from Lemeiux, will they wait for it to be completed?

There's no way the citizens of Pittsburgh are going to pony up for a new Igloo. They don't care about sports unless there's a pointy ball involved. With no sizeable TV market to fill the coffers, and the draw of a Crosby-featured team getting other cities licking their chops, I don't see how they could possibly stay there.

I totally agree about moving it to a Canadian market.. but can someone answer why it is that canadian markets are denied every time the league expands? Especially now with the strong canadian dollar and now in the "NEW NHL" where salaries are relativly under control I would think that a some canadian city's name would be thrown around in regards to the future of the penguins. Columbus can't possibly have a bigger hockey following than Hamilton or Winnipeg... what the hell are the blue jackets doing in Ohio? Honestly if someone knows any good reason please tell me.

When all the water runs out south of the border, all that ice will be like oil, so look for the Yellowknife Yellow Snowmen to be making an appearance around 2035, featuring Sidney Crosby Jr (just as good as his dad, they say) and Ando Theodore in net

Who said I still wouldn't be a Habs fan?  I think I'd keep my allegiance, and Halifax would be my second-favourite team.

I think the PEG is the best choice for them, put another team out west and bring detroit back to the east where we can rekindle that original 6 rivalry.

Detroit is such an East team, they should have come back when Toronto did
