Much has been said in this forum regarding Julien being too mild mannered behind the becn with officials. The idea being that, because he is too nice, we get more penalties than teams that have coaches who are more, shall we say, vocal with their concerns as to how the game is being called. What I found was very interesting..take it for what it is worth which, scientifically, is probably nothing. I think it does show that in reality, the referees are not swayed by your mouth.
Tampa Bay- Coach John Torterella- one of the biggest mouths in the league when it comes to complaining- Lightning lead league with penalty minutes/game (ironically only have 2 majors, the least amount in the league so all are minors)
New Jersey- Larry Robinson- You think Julien is mild mannered? This guy could conduct a funeral service back there- Second in league pM/Game
Buffalo- Lindy Ruff- Hard to pinpoint this guy but from what I have seen he is a yapper 3rd in league average
Sant Jose- 4th in League average- Ron Wilson is pretty quiet but I have not seen him alot
New York Rangers- Tom Rennie is a very quiet guy- 5th in average Penalties
Philidelphia- Ken Hitchcock- mouth is bigger than his waistline
Carloina- Laviolette- pretty quite guy back there
14. Montreal- 14th in league average..smack dab in the middle
15. Toronto- Pat Quinn- one of the biggest whiners in the league-has not done him alot of good by the looks of it
24. Atlanta- 24th in penalty minutes per game average and this is the team with the coach that Toronto calls a goon coach? Better look in the mirror Quinn.

However, I'm talking about BAD calls...disallowed goals, ghost penalties, missed calls...etc.
Too bad there are no stats for that...because it sure seems like guys like Quinn, Keenan & Hitchcock (who all freak out) get more than their fair share of favorable results!

I wonder if it's really all about status. Meaning, if you've paid your dues you can freak out but if you're kind of new like Julien you've gotta keep your mouth shut. Hitchcock was kind of a quiet guy when he first showed up, if I remember correctly. But then he won a cup.
Awesome post Barry! Just the sort of great reading to help us through the lull. BTW I hear Genghis Khan could be sort of quiet, and look what he managed to manage
Leona Helmsley and Martha Stewart are pretty mouthy; it didn't help them either. Lord Black will not be spared by his big mouth either, I suspect.
Good analysis, barry33! One of the best posts in a long time.
