You know, the most fickle thing in hockey is momentum. Sometimes you have it and you can do no wrong and you win a bunch of games you have no business winning. Everything you touch turns to gold. But when you do not have it, the opposite happens. Case in point right now, Buffalo has it, Montreal does not. If you may recall, at the begining of the year, the Sabres were horrid and all the word was out of Buffalo was for Lindy Ruff to get canned and for Darcy Rigere to make a trade. Neither of those things happend. Now they have uncle Mo in the dressing room and look at them. I watched their game agains the Avs last night and the Sabres made so many mistakes yet still found a way to win (much like the Habs did earlier in the season).
When you do not have momentum on your team everything goes wrong. Confidence gets down. You grip your stick a little bit tighter. Your goalie gets shaky. And the mistakes you got away with when you were winning are magnified 10,000 times over. All of a sudden all the good thinsg that people said about you are negatives. I remember everyone raving about how much depth we had when we were winning. Now it seems that with a few injuries, we are woefully lacking depth. How does one get momentum back you ask? If I had the answer for that I would make millions. Sometimes it is just a matter of getting on a roll..to do that you need Uncle Mo's gorgeous wife, Lady Luck. Lady Luck has not been kind to the habs lately. To be frank, Lady Luck is a prosititute. She has no loyalties and goes where she feels like.
One thing is painfully obvious right now that we need and that is a sniper (yes I know we need defence and a second line center etc etc). But we need someone who is a scoring threat. Yes to an extent Kovalev fills that role but not in the pure "sniper mold". I am talking Iginla, Jagr, Crosby, Ovechkin type of guys who are a threat to score everytime they touch the puck. We do not have that element and it shows. Here's hoping Uncle Mo and Lady Luck come back to the habs room soon.

We should encourage Lady Luck to sleep with Uncle Mo. (If she's a prostitute, all it would take is a few dollars, right?) The offspring (let's hope for a boy) would be one heck of a hockey player! Sidney Crosby would be a good example of "hockey genes"; he has loads of good hockey players on both sides of this family.

I couldn't agree with you more. When we're in a tight game, or on a critical power play, and I look at the bench hoping to see a Habs player that other teams might actually fear -- the kind of saviour who can seemingly will the puck into the net, he's just not there. In the days of the trap, and clutch and grind hockey, snipers and offensive skill players were a bit handcuffed and teams like the Devils could win Cups without one. But even then, guys on other teams like Sakic and Forsberg still showed what a sniper could do. The Habs haven't had one for a long time. When was the last time anyone looked at a list of top goal scorers in the league and saw a Montreal name? Was it back in the days of Steve Shutt? Guy Lafleur? Maurice Richard?
Teams can win without snipers -- as the Habs did in '93. But there had better be consistent offensive production from players on all three lines, a stingy defense, and solid goaltending to do it. I'm not sure we have that team right now, but on the other side, for the first time in many years I do feel like the potential may be there.
Can Ryder become that kind of sniper someday, the way LeClair did as soon as he left Montreal? Possibly -- he's got the shot if his motivation is there. Can Zednik start putting more pucks in the net? Maybe -- if Koivu comes back soon and starts feeding him cross-crease passes again. Will Kovalev return and play like we all know he can, netting a goal a game by season's end? Anything's possible, but Kovy always seems to lose interest as seasons progress.
If we had a player like Ovetchkin or Crosby, imagine what a boost the rest of the team would get. That one piece of the puzzle would make the whole pipcure look a whole lot brighter wouldn't it?
