Now we know the price of a topline centre in the "new NHL"...and the Habs CAN afford that!
It sure would have been something to see Bob pull off a three-way deal (similar to the Hackett deal) and bring Jumbo Joe to Montreal (yeah that would about do it for And-o crappin his drawers and getting all teary eyed)
And-o feels that San Jose will win this deal BIGTIME over the long-term....BIGTIME!

I can understand your enthusiasm, Ando, and I do wish the Habs would get a bonafide big man scoring machine. My only hesitation is that over the years they always emphasize defense first, and seem to turn every player into a defensive forward. I'd like to see them get a sniper and let him snipe!

The reason San Jose got him a bit cheap is that they absorbed 1.66 mil for the next 3 years and Thornton has a no-trade clause starting next season. Also, I am sure that part of the deal was that there would be no Eastern Conference trades of him. McKenzie also reported that the deal was made exclusively between them... noother GM's new about it. That's weird.
