Game Thread TB vs MTL - Nov 8/05
Permalink Closed

This will be a hot contest.  I think it will be a close game with a 1-goal victory either way (empty netter aside, of course.)  I'm hoping that Montreal remembers the series in '04 and takes a little revenge.  Imagine what the Habs could have done had they not spent all their energy on the Bruins that year?  Wow.  So, close game, 4-3 Habs, Kovalev the winner.  He's coming out of his shell!  CJ will outmanage a crafty Toterella and Theo will win us the game.

This one will be all about team defense.  Tampa Bay has loads of talent and depth...and the Habs need to step-it-up and skate hard at both ends!

...I hear Bonk should be back...and I hope Bulis is as well.  Surely Begin will be feeling better by now also.

Should be a good one!

From what I read on line in the Gazette, Bonk will not play tonight although he is skating. He may return for Leafs game. All I know is I would love to finally see the PP break out with 4-5 goals. What are we lacking on the PP that Julien and Gainey could provide to help us??????

Johab, that would be wonderful, but I think it's gonna be a close game. I agree with ando, it's all about defense, as the Bolts have strong skilled offence. Theo has to show again his ability as he did on Saturday, and I'm sure the winning streak will go on. I can't remember when I last saw the Habs loosing a game ....

I totally agree. I cannot wait to see this game, it's going to be a nail-bitter! It will be a close game... but aren't all "New NHL" games?

Kovalev is heating up and so is Souray (both made some great plays last game against Buffalo). My predictions (or hopes):

Montreal 4
Tampa Bay 2

1st Period - Good skating on both sides, Tampa scores first on the power play. Montreal scores 2 (1 on the power play) to make the score 2.

2nd Period - Good defensive plays on both sides, lots of shots on goal, good goaltending, no goals.

3rd Period - Tampa comes out FLYING. Montreal plays a defensive game for the first half of the period. Tampa outshoots montreal by 8 shots this period. Montreal scores 1 and gets the crowd back into the game. Montreal 3, Tampa 1. Tampa scores on the power play with 5:00 or so minutes left in the period. Montreal 3, Tampa 2. In the last 5:00 minutes Montreal scores and the crowd goals wild. Tampa FLIES and pulls their goalie but no luck!

Montreal takes the game and gains 2 points for a total of 25! Stays on top of their division and the eastern conference.

Montreal Goal Scorers:
Kovalev / Riberio / Ryder / Souray

...Most of that is what I hope will happen! Be cool if it actually does!

2 keys to look for a win:

They must do what they've been so good at which is to shut down the #1 line of the opposition.

They must also continue with the recent improvement and solid defensive play.  Pieces are falling more into place each game.

Montreal must keep ahead of Ottawa so that the Sens "must win" each game.  That is a harder thing to do than a "should win", I think.

There are 4 teams that I wouldn't want to face right now - Ottawa, Carolina, Detroit and Montreal.  There are reasons why these teams are at the top.

There's been a fair bit of talk about momentum. You know it's funny, what's been great for this team, I think, is that we aren't winning on momentum.  We haven't yet had real momentum.

It seems like every game has been tough, so every game that comes up is always a little bit worrisome. I feel like it's keeping our team productively on edge.

good observation....i agree that winning one goal games keeps the feeling that we need to play better and harder.  it prevents us from going into a lull that might occur after winning by big margins

we have been gaining confidence and aren't afraid to play from down a goal or 2.  i think it wouldn't hurt to win a few games here and there by more than a few goals but it doesn't do any damage except to our nerves to win by one!

good luck tonight!!!!! go habs go!

Call me a pessimist, but I get the feeling we're not going to come up with this one. We're due for a let down. Lightning may strike again if you know what i mean.

Well we won at Buffalo for the first time in years, we won in Ny against the Rangers for the first time in years. I say we owe payback to Tampa for the sweep 2 tears ago. I say it is our time   IT IS OUR TIME

From what I hear, Theodore is the only thing keeping us in this one.  Way to go, Theo!  Time for him to steal us a point, or better yet: Two points!

Well we hit the post twice, but the PP needs to pick it up. Only 2 shots in a periode you cannot score like that. We need a quick PP goal in the 3rd to get these fans back into the game. Then and only then will the Habs get going. I know we cannot win every game, but I want to BEAT LECAVEILER please where are the old Gods from the Forum. We need them NILD and AndO it is your job to stir up the Gods.

2nd period was the worst period we've played this year. Time for the Dandy on the 3rd line experiment to end. Put Pleks out there on the 3rd line and let Dandy play D.

Well the Habs beat that Lecavalier, you should check out NorthwindNS post above it is very close to how the game went. He predicted pretty good. I see the following things postive

Shorthanded they stopped 8 PP by Tampa Bay

Theo played tremendous

Not so good: Kovy seemed flat, unable to handle the puck. He did hot the post twice. I want Bonk and Bulis Back. Give credit to the defense the lastt 1 minute of play they kept them to the outside and wasted time. Sundstrum was very good.

What a game! 25 points! 1st in our Conference and Division.

Awesome penalty killing (moslty Theo?).
Sourray seems to be back to his normal self.
Markov is getting some good shots... he's being much more then just a D-man.

Kovalev???? Komisarek has to tone down on the penalties.

Good game guys!

Habs stirred.....TB beaten....pretty good recipe if you ask me.  I have never doubted my Habs but WOW.  While some say, "How long can we win these close games?", the fact is that they are.  For me it is a sign of character.  They would never have done this well the last season in these situations.  Anyway, I am not going to question the hockey gods.....just going to enjoy.

Go Habs

Does anyone remember the season of the show Dallas where Bobby Ewing comes back to life and the entire previous season had been a dream of Pam Ewing's?

I wonder if there's any correlation with the habs this year?

The unreal part of this was the pass to Zed!  Wow, was that a nice goal.  What a team.  I hate to say Theo won it for us because it looks like there was a real team effort with Kovy 2 assists, 2PP goals from the D and the top line of TBay was shut down.  Wow.  Hope we don't take PIT to lightly because a loss there will really derail the season (at least for a bit.)

My wife suggested that I wouldn't enjoy the games as much if the Habs were blowing their opponents out.  I'm pretty sure I would like to test that theory the next three or four games.  You lnow, 5-2, 6-1, 4-0 wins.  I don't think my heart/blood pressure can take many more of these finishes.  How many game saving saves (for lack of a better word) did Theo have to come up with in the last 1:30, let alone the entire game?
