For those of you who may have watched the highlights on TSN, there was a tragic accident at the Univertsite de Moncton vs Acadia game Saturday in Moncton. Sebastian Savage., a third year U De M player, went head first into the boards while racing for a loose puck. It was purely an accident as the Acadia player fell and Savage went over top of him into the boards. It was as ugly an incident as I have seen in all my years of hockey. When you watch it you just get sick to your stomach. After laying motionnless on the ice for close to 20 minutes he was rushed to a Moncton hospital. He has undergone surgery for a broken vertebrae. Bottom line is that he is parylized from the neck down. Although team officials are not saying, the word has it that the kid will never walk again.
My son is 16 and plays midget hockey. There have been times in the years I have watched him where he has given me a scare. I remember an incident in Bantam where he was hit head first into the boards and did not move for 5 minutes. Thank the good Lord he was a big kid and is ok. No parent should have to go through what his parents are going through. In a show of class, Claude Julien called the family (like CJ, Savage is a native of Ottawa) at the hospital on Sunday to offer his support and prayers.
I ask that we all pray as well. Miracles do happen and this kid is too young to never walk again.

Dear Lord - thank you for the blessings you give us every day. In a world sometimes consumed by wins and losses, let us not lose sight of what a gift it is to be alive. I offer my prayers for the young man who was tragically hurt this weekend doing what he loved. I pray that he and his family have the strength to enjoy life in whatever way they must and that they not take for granted your infinite love. For only through you is there life. Amen
i did see that replay and i thought exactly the same thing. My prayers go out to him and i know its possible becasue thats what they first said of brian savage when he broke his neck. i had no clue CJ called him and that for sure is a classy thing to do.
My thoughts and prayers are with this young man. I had a friend in university (at SMU in the mid-70's) whose younger brother was killed in a midget game. Very sad when those things happen; so pointless.

Horribly sad to see and hear that it was a C-5 displaced # which means certain chord damage if not complete rupture. He will be sadly paralyzed from neck down and most of these injuries will shorten life span severely because of diffuse infection. Those are the crude facts. A big reason that when you give to charity, consider those with not only spinal injuries but the research to finding cures for neural muscular pathologies like MS, Duchennes and ALS. Those cures will also go a long way in treating this young hockey player. Keep in mind, as sad as Cancer is, you have a chance to beat it ( Saks). With for example ALS, you have no chance! It's a complete death sentence with average life of 2 years. No one deserves to suffer this way including this young man.
Sorry to get all mushy, but working as a health care professional, I strongly feel for these patients! absolutely no cure!
Omnipotent and eternal God, the everlasting Salvation of those who believe, hear us on behalf of Thy sick servant, Sebastian Savage, for whom we beg the aid of Thy pitying mercy, that, with his bodily health restored, he may give thanks to Thee in Thy church. Through Christ our Lord.
