MONTREAL GAZETTE: Pat Hickey reports the Montreal Canadiens demoted once highly touted blueline prospect Ron Hainsey to their farm club yesterday. He had to pass through waivers first but cleared, indicating other clubs hold the same assessment as Habs management of Hainsey's ability to make it in the NHL this season. Hickey also reported GM Bob Gainey tried to trade Hainsey in the days leading up to the team's final cuts but there were no takers. Hainsey might be successfully recalled by the Canadiens at some point in the season, although if another team claimed him off waivers, the Habs would have to pay half his salary.
Spector's Note: Hainsey's stock has dropped noticeably over the past three years. Once considered a big part of their future, Hainsey now seems to have no future at all with the Canadiens. It wouldn't be surprising if Gainey shops him later in the season, either singly or as part of a package deal.
Habtastic- I agree. Hainsey had ample opportunity and did not produce. How long are we supposed to hang onto him? It is easy to sit here and say that Gainey should have gotten something for him. Like what? Another underachieving dman to send to Hamilton? You don't think that Gainey tried to get as much as he could for Marcel Hossa too? I am sure he was on the phone steady for a week and that the Garth Murray deal was the best he could do. It is easy for us to say that we could have gotten more for Hossa. But there are many things to consider. Number one, Hossa is STILL an unknown. We all say he has potential and may come back to haunt us. Maybe he will. But I doubt very much that teams were going to pound down BG's door offering us high draft picks for him. Number 2, there is no doubt that the Habs still owed the Rangers the "future considerations" part of the Kovalev deal. And last, but not least, the Rangers are no threat to make the playoffs this year or anytime sooner. So he may score a goal or 2 against us in regular season. But a place like NY is safe to ship him.

Too bad for Hainsey but much of what I've read over time is the problem he has between the ears. Also the ego thing. I imagine he will be called up sometime this year and we will see what he can do.
